Limiting Beliefs

Something to ponder…. Are you your own worst enemy? Our brain is like our body, it is the product of what we feed it. How healthy are the thoughts you are feeding your mind? Are they negative? Have you ever considered that Limiting Beliefs may be causing you to hesitate in your life?

Limiting beliefs are defined as “something you believe to be true about yourself, about others, or about the world that limits you in some way”.  The issue is when these beliefs create limitations and boundaries in our perception, these self-imposed beliefs limit our clarity and judgement and can create fear, shut down and cause tremendous stagnation in our life.

Some examples of limiting beliefs are:

  • I’m not worthy
  • I’m not educated or smart enough
  • I’m afraid of failure
  • I’ve already tried everything
  • It’s selfish for me to want more
  • All the good ones are taken
  • I have to keep them happy
  • I need to be in control
  • It has to be perfect
  • Last time I did this, it didn’t work out
  • It’s not fair
  • There is no point in trying

What thoughts like this do is create a trigger in our thought process,  Immediately when we are faced with a similar situation in life we associate the possible outcome with the negative thought, emotion or experience that occurred previously, we essentially almost relive the memory or experience every time.  This then creates a chain reaction of fear, self- loathing and ultimately procrastination. It essentially is us creating our own self –fulfilling prophecy with thoughts like “I am going to fail anyway” and “What’s the point, it will just end the same way” , that we do not bother to even try because we already failed in our mind.

The key to breaking this pattern is to identify why, when and how these thoughts originated and remember that they are the past and not the present. Try to almost treat every experience as a new one, Keep the learnings from past situations as experiences and knowledge, not as roadblocks. It takes a lot to admit to fear, but it is only through self-awareness, acknowledgement and detaching from the past triggers and changing our perception that we can really change and grow. This has certainly been the case in my experience.  Our mind is a powerful tool, we can use it to remain limited or we can use it to propel us to limitless potential. The choice is ultimately yours….
